Production from side-track wells
Side-tracks drilling technology has been widely used during the last few years. It is one of the most effective technologies allowing to:
Increase low flow rate wells productivity;- Increase oil production in wells at late development stage;
- Increase reservoirs production rate;
- Enable production from upper and lower reservoirs;
Recover those wells where production couldn’t be recovered by any other means.
By drilling side-tracks it becomes possible to exploit never before used reservoir areas and recover hard-to-extract oil reserves. Side tracking is drilled from the main well and has, as a rule, wide pitch angle and minor diameters.
On April 12th, 2010, for the first time in practice ESP of 319 series was installed into a side-track well (#30 220, cluster 781, Samotlorskoye field, Open JSC “Samotlorneftegaz”). Production casing ID is 6.6 inch. Installation of 319 series ESP system into the side-track was performed under the supervision of Irik Khabipov, Samotlorneftegaz Senior Engineer, and Igor Gutuev, Production Department Director.
Irik Khabipov explained that well # 30220 used to be in non-operating well stock. On March 1st, 2010 after side-track predrilling (OD 4.48 in, wall thickness 0.29 in) specialists performed reservoir hydraulic fracturing, then casing callipering for slim ESP.
The unit fit perfectly into the side-track and was installed at 8015 ft depth. Start-up was done at 9:40 pm, flow appeared at 150 Hz.
Such promising technology and innovative equipment is quite up-to-date as it allows fluid production from side-track with OD less than 4 in, while increasing well flow rate and reducing drilling costs. It was the first time when such equipment with permanent magnet motor had been installed into side-track well.
As we wrote before, on November 2nd, 2008 first 319 series unit was installed into borehole of well No.102 in Spiridonovskoye field of Petroleum and Gas Extracting Administration “Buzulukneft”. The unit was pulled out due to well intervention and run life amounted to 574 days.
ESP system includes permanent magnet motor with OD 3.19 inch and efficiency up to 88.6%. Flow rate range of pump is 250 – 1500 bpd at 2850-6000 RPM range, efficiency equals to 53%, maximum head – 11 480 ft.
